Dieter Rams’ Design Principles

Dieter Rams is one of the greatest designers of our times. He is a German industrial designer and academic associated with the consumer products company Braun, the furniture company Vitsœ, and the functionalist school of industrial design. His unobtrusive approach and belief in “Less, but better” design generated a timeless quality in his products and have influenced the design of many products.

Dieter Rams’ 10 “Good Design” principles;

  1. is innovative.
  2. makes a product useful.
  3. is aesthetic.
  4. makes a product understandable.
  5. is unobtrusive.
  6. is honest.
  7. is long-lasting.
  8. is thorough down to the last detail.
  9. is environmentally-friendly.
  10. is as little design as possible.

Recently in 2021-Dec, Jo Barnard updated Dieter Ram's famous ten principles for the modern era. Here is the excellent checklist of your responsibilities when starting out on a brand new project.

  5. is designed for appropriate lifespan.
  6. is intuitive.
  7. is user and planet-centred.
  8. encourages positive behaviour change.

  10. is considered down to the last detail.
